Not very often do i consider anything sports related personal. This is the exception.
A good friend of mine 'Chris Salamida' has been playing for the Houston Astros in their minor league system the last few years. He DOMINATED the New York Penn League in A ball his first few years playing Pro-Ball. In 06, Salamida was 10-1 with a 1.06 ERA,
leading the ValleyCats to a Stedler Division Championship, while
walking away with the Short-Season Pitcher of the Year Award. By no means am I saying that proformance in A ball translates at all to major league success but it definatly shows potential.
Last year playing AA ball he was not as successful but still held his own and continued to improve. He got hit around here and there every-so often but what minor league pitcher is safe from that? I havn't done too much research but Salamida is having a better minor league carreer than a few guys you might have heard of....
Johan Santana, Roy Oswalt, and Billy Wagner (Oswalt and Wagner played in the same league as Salamida)
Those guys proved that if you have the heart and the stuff decent Minor league pitchers can go on to have superstar MLB success.
Salamida has a low to mid 90's fastball, and the Astros give him credit for a good change up and a devistating curve. I also know he can thow a mean cutter and a fork ball for strikes as well.
The moral of the Story is, Chris was cut the other day, why I am not so sure. It is unfortunate because most teams have their rosters all filled up at this point. The Astros made a huge mistake letting this kid go and i can only hope he gets picked up by the mets.
If your team needs a fresh arm and a winner for one of their minor league clubs, you should lobby to get this guy.
